REC Genesis to world premiere in SXSW

Jaume Balagueró won a Catalan Film Academy Gaudí Award on Monday for Mientras Duermes, which also saw awards for Alberto Marini in screenplay, Luis Tosar in the lead role and an editing award for Guillermo de la Cal.

Now Balagueró’s brother-in-arms of the REC series, Paco Plaza, will see his prequel of the original [REC]3 Genesis premiere in the midnight section at SXSW, an excellent American film festival that seems to always fly under the radar here in Spain, till now. And star Leticia Dolera’s screen shot is the face of the line-up announcement.

Goya Awards 2012 nominations

The Goya Awards nominations were announced yesterday. Films I have worked on, or people and companies I have worked with, were nominated in various categories and I thought I’d give a nod to them here. I won’t wax poetic on the whole shebang, since there are other blog sites for that. :) But, you can see the full list in English here.

Luis Tosar was nominated for his title role in Mientras Duermes, a script I had the pleasure of reading (and translating) in its various drafts as Filmax raised financing. Surprisingly and disappointingly, the film did not bring in as many nominations as many in the Spanish film industry expected, a fact that became a trending topic yesterday on Twitter after the announcement.

In the best animated film category, colleagues were behind two nominations: Arrugas, a film about Alzheimer’s and old age that was co-produced with colleagues at Cromosoma, and the kids’ flick Papa, soy una zombi. Arrugas also brought in a nom under the Best Adapted Screenplay category. I saw Arrugas when it screened at San Sebastián Film Festival and was impressed by how the film could get through to the audience, but also to my strictly English-speaking parents who were reading the subtitles of animated characters and yet, were moved to tears.

And finally, hitting a nominations high note were colleagues at Arcadia Motion Pictures who brought in 11 nominations for Blackthorn, an amazing feat, although Sam Shepard not getting recognition for his role as the title character was pretty shocking. But with the nominations on other productions they were involved in, the company garnered an incredible 27.

Congratulations to all!

Premis Gaudí noms announced

Some of the films I have translated were honored with nominations by the Catalan Film Academy. Check out an article about the noms in Spanish here.

Mientras Duermes with the fantastic Luís Tosar brought in 15 nominations.

And Copito de Nieve brought in two nominations. Congrats, Filmax and the teams!

Balagueró’s Mientras Duermes premieres Oct. 7

I’m late with this one. My bad, as I should have been more on top of Alberto Marini‘s overactive tweeting (hehehe…).

So, Mientras Duermes, the totally creepy script that was born from Alberto’s twisted mind (and whose different versions I had the privilege to read as I did translations for Filmax) will premiere in Spain October 7th. See it, for real!

It’s directed by Jaume Balagueró who has scared me to death with the REC franchise and stars the fantastic Luis Tosar who I happen to have a totally random photo with at the Miami International Film Festival from when I was still at HBO along with Mercedes Moncada, Roberto Busó García and Tono Folguera.

I don’t know why, but I have the lurking sensation that Luis may have no recollection of this grand moment. Not to worry, Luis, I do.

So, October 7th…write it on your calendars, folks! In the meantime, check out the trailer:
