The Goya Awards nominations were announced yesterday. Films I have worked on, or people and companies I have worked with, were nominated in various categories and I thought I’d give a nod to them here. I won’t wax poetic on the whole shebang, since there are other blog sites for that.
But, you can see the full list in English here.
Luis Tosar was nominated for his title role in Mientras Duermes, a script I had the pleasure of reading (and translating) in its various drafts as Filmax raised financing. Surprisingly and disappointingly, the film did not bring in as many nominations as many in the Spanish film industry expected, a fact that became a trending topic yesterday on Twitter after the announcement.
In the best animated film category, colleagues were behind two nominations: Arrugas, a film about Alzheimer’s and old age that was co-produced with colleagues at Cromosoma, and the kids’ flick Papa, soy una zombi. Arrugas also brought in a nom under the Best Adapted Screenplay category. I saw Arrugas when it screened at San Sebastián Film Festival and was impressed by how the film could get through to the audience, but also to my strictly English-speaking parents who were reading the subtitles of animated characters and yet, were moved to tears.
And finally, hitting a nominations high note were colleagues at Arcadia Motion Pictures who brought in 11 nominations for Blackthorn, an amazing feat, although Sam Shepard not getting recognition for his role as the title character was pretty shocking. But with the nominations on other productions they were involved in, the company garnered an incredible 27.
Congratulations to all!
